Horseshoe Canyon Ghost Panel and Canyon Wall. (2021)

$2,500.00

My dad has been obsessed with Horseshoe Canyon ever since I can remember. He’s been getting inspiration to make ancient art there for over 45 years. I remember going in the canyon with him as a kid, and we hiked down too late. It was boiling with no shade, so it could never appreciate it. But I rememberthe how much meant to him to make it down the canyon after being in the army for 35 years retiring as a lieutenant colonel as he was a jumpmaster and jumped out of airplane so often it destroyed his feet.

I decided that his dementia is possibly a side effect from Agent Orange as he has documentation from being affected by the toxic. Horseshoe Canyon instead of the 20 figures that are at the bottom edge of the canyon. I wanted to bring the whole magnificence of it to his living room. I tried to go on the Internet to see what I could find to help me make this piece, but everything was grainy and nothing gave me a sense of really being near this monument.

That October, I spent just three days driving, one day in the canyon drawing, and one day driving home, and my wife was pregnant. When I started to descend into the canyon, I realize just how incredible it was. It’s like the Disneyland canyons. Everything looks like the sculpture made by God. When I finally got down there, I sat in a bush covered myself and ants and drew for five hours straight out all of the details that I would use for this piece.
